Is free speech in trouble again?

You are viewing a post about Is free speech in trouble again? at Newsami, posted in Politics.

I came across an article on Local6 News today and I couldn’t believe what I was reading. After having George Bush as President for almost over 6 years I will admit, I’m not surprised by a lot of the things I see happen in the United States. The last thing that got me this riled up was when I heard about “Free-Speech Zones”.

“”When Bush travels around the United States, the Secret Service visits the location ahead of time and orders local police to set up “free speech zonesâ€ or “protest zonesâ€ where people opposed to Bush policies (and sometimes sign-carrying supporters) are quarantined. These zones routinely succeed in keeping protesters out of presidential sight and outside the view of media covering the event.”"

Now that I’m all pissed off about that again, let’s get to this new problem I saw on Local6. You can imagine my surprise when I read the headline Boy Charged For Meowing At Neighbor Lady. At first I thought it was a lame rip of The Onion, but I soon realized I was sadly mistaken. There is actually a 78-year-old lady from Pennsylvania who is filing harassment charges against her 14 year old neighbor for meowing at her.

You might want to take a minute to think about that. Harassment charges for meowing at your neighbor. Now that in itself blew me away. This lady doesn’t have the right not to be offended by this child. It would be just as easy (if not 1000 times easier) to ignore the little fella, but instead she calls the cops.

“”As she walked in front of the house, nothing was said,” the boy’s mother, Sally Loughner, told the court. “He stepped off the porch to make sure the dog didn’t get out. As he reached down and got the dog, he said, ‘Meow.’ … She said, ‘Do you want me to call the cops again?’ I said, ‘Go ahead, he hasn’t done anything wrong.’”"

And his mother is right. This kid is doing nothing wrong. Free Speech is still around for now, so the people who care about it better start doing something because slowly and slowly it seems our government and judges are trying to end (or “limit”) it.

So now that I can’t think straight I figure nothing else will surprise me in this article. I was wrong.

“”The judge heard from both parties Tuesday. He decided to wait 90 days before ruling, saying he’ll decide what to do after seeing how the boy and his neighbor get along in the meantime.”"

What the fuck? How can a judge be allowed to do this. He is going to make a lawful decision based on his expectations. If he thinks the kid is wrong, and he continues “harassing” this lady, the judge will probably call it harassment. If he stops “harassing” this lady, the judge will probably drop the case.

Now let me ask you this. How can a United States judge (remember, these guys and girls are the people in charge of interpreting the law of the land) make a ruling based on personal preference rather than actual law? Sure it might be “encouragement” for the kid to stop, but I’m sure the kid will see it more as a threat than encouragement.

So are Americans going to stand for this? Probably. Considering so much has been done against the illegal wiretapping, WMD lies, free-speech zones and the George Bush in general. It’s time for everybody to take a step back and really ask ourselves, can you really fucking be offended by the word “MEOW”?

And to top it off, another article just came out. A colorado school teacher put on administrative leave because he refused to remove foreign flags from a mock UN classroom. District officials said state law forbids the display of foreign flags unless they are temporary and related to the curriculum.

I think it’s time for a nice stiff drink.
